Editing can be a great revealer.  Sitting at my laptop in the days and weeks (and months) following my time visiting Alcatraz, editing and reediting these photos, I found that Iā€™d prioritized imagery emphasizing two things: architectural features that were emblematic of both the harshness and the mundanity of institutionalized confinement (metal bars, visitation booths, the rec yard), and angles and lighting that accentuated the moods and emotions that I felt must be inescapable in prison life: melancholy, loneliness, and a longing for independence.
